Natalie Portman Glams At Venice

A "humanity award" for social commitment has been dedicated to Natalie Portman during the Venice Film Festival.

Those behind the award said Portman was seriously involved with important social and environmental programmes.

They include the Tacare Girl's Scholarship Programme of the Jane Goodall Institute, a non-profit organisation that carries out wildlife research in Tanzania.

The programme was established to address limited opportunities for women's education.

It provides access to secondary and higher education, leading to job opportunities.

Portman's prize is 50,000 US dollars and a trophy. The cash she receives is being donated to the programme, organisers said.

Academy Award-winning Italian set designer Dante Ferretti, who worked on The Aviator and Sweeney Todd, was named as the recipient of the "star of the year" award.

The prizes were being awarded at the Kineo Italian Movie Awards in Venice.

Movie Review : Rock On!

Guess what, I'm going to watch this movie again. And maybe, a third time, too! Excel Entertainment excels yet again. With ROCK ON, the team of Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani are spot on.

The movie has a Hollywood feel; the casting is just perfect, every character is given due importance, the music is way above brilliant, and the lyrics are something you will rarely hear in a rock ballad. I guess, it will soon be a trend; simple, inquiring questions that are actually everyday happenings. Hats off to Javed Akhtar.

The styling of clothes by Niharika Khan and of the sets are given a minute detailing. The background score captures the mood of the film. Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonca have teamed with the makers to come out with melodies that will easily knock off the frequency of Kabhi Kabhi Aditi and Pappu Can't Dance from the film JAANE TU... ,on radio stations, to the background.

In short, this film is a lesson in filmmaking. On how to scout for the right actors for the part; of how to blend lyrics with the mood and how to add music to the flavour. Director Abhishek Kapoor who made his acting debut ages ago alongside Twinkle Khanna has shown immense talent behind the camera getting the best out of each and every character.

And what about Farhan Akhtar? Yes, what about him? I mean, how do you describe his performance? It's easy to go overboard when a performance just blows you away. And this here is not just one good performance from one actor, but the product as a whole, which leaves you shaking your head in disbelief. Farhan proved himself as a director of repute with DIL CHAHTA HAI and then DON. As an actor, he is simply honest to his craft. You don't get the feeling that this here is his first outing on screen in front of the camera. Agreed he began shooting for THE FAKIR three years ago, but what he comes out with is stuff of what seasoned actors are made of. His singing is awesome. His unique voice texture lends that freshness to the rock ballads and his miming to his own songs on stage is what legendary rock stars are made of. You rock dude.

Prachi Desai has vowed viewers as the bahu on television; she takes her performance a step further making her Bollywood debut with confidence. She adds a touch of freshness to a very complex role for a newcomer. Shahana Goswami, who too makes her debut, is a talent to watch out for. As first the bubbly girlfriend of Arjun Rampal, and then the nagging wife who has to bear the burden of taking care of the household, she is impressive, almost addictive. Arjun Rampal is slowly coming into his own. After playing a character with a negative shade in OM SHANTI OM, he returns with another powerful performance as Joe Mascarenhas the lead guitarist of the band. Vibrant at first, and then subdued he walks the act with a rock star gait. Purab Kohli's cute act as the Killer Drummer, and 'life' of the group enchants you. Catch his 'I Will Surive Act' and you will know what I mean. As for Luke Kenny, he has got a role that suits his personality and he does full justice to it. Did I forget to mention about the editing? Take a bow, Deepa Bhatia. A word of mention for Jason West too, the film's cinematographer. The filming of the concerts is almost real!

ROCK ON is about four friends in their twenties for who music is a passion they dedicatedly pursue. Music binds them; rehearsals make sure they are always together. They have a band called 'Magik'. The movie is interestingly sewn in flashbacks. Abhiskek gives the flow a seamless look even though he has to travel a few years back and forth every now and then. As a band, Adi (Farhan), Rob (Luke Kenny), KD (Purab Kohli) and Joe (Arjun) were a treat. They brought the house down whenever they performed. But somewhere down the line, something went wrong and each go their separate ways. For 10 years, they do not meet each other. What was it that blew their friendship away? The simple narration keeps you on edge while the music builds up the suspense, if you may call it that. Because you want to know what it was that made these four thick pals, who stood up for each other, go their own way. And what it is that brings them back together for that one last gig?

This movie, I'm sure will inspire a generation of youngsters to pick up the guitar and also dabble with lyrics.

Movie Review : Chamku

The movie tells the tale of a Naxalite Chamku ( Bobby Deol ) who’s miraculously saved after a police encounter and inducted into covert operations by RAW and IB (quite a leap from one side of the law to the other). Working for the government, Chamku kills cold-bloodedly. He assassinates the anti-national elements without whom the IB, in all its wisdom, deems the world to be a better place.

so Chamku becomes a killing machine until his heart throbs the moment he sets eyes on a kindergarten teacher ( Priyanka Chopra ) who, too, falls for ‘Chamku’ despite the fact that he is visibly the most unromantic, if not boring, person and his conversations with her are restricted to the mono-syllabic hmm..ha.Ho Hum.

With the movie seemingly going nowhere, director Kabeer Kaushik (who’s not even half as good as he was in Sehar ) decides to throw in a twist. The plot takes a vendetta angle with the entry of a chubby-cheeked Thakur whom Chamku has hated since childhood.

After that the story keeps zigzagging like the bullets that fly zooming by in every next frame of this grossly violent film. Chamku plans revenge but is dissuaded from the course by his shrewd boss ( Irrfan Khan ) until Thakur himself emerges before him one day.

Bobby Deol convincingly keeps a singular expression for the most part of the film, but that’s not a compliment for his performance. Priyanka Chopra perhaps had ample free time on her hand that she even decided to do this film. Ritesh Deshmukh makes a brief appearance as Chamku’s colleague who plans to retire from his bloody job but retires from the world instead. Irrfan Khan is visibly uninterested in playing the character of Chamku’s manipulative boss.

All said, ‘Chamku’ turns out to be a big disappointment if you compare it with director Kabeer Kaushik’s riveting ‘Sehar’. The movie’s plot is as disjointed as the life of its protagonist. The songs are as painful as the refreshments bill in the multiplex. The film has some stunning visuals and a few deftly executed sequences, but that’s too little a compensation for the time and money spent (rather wasted) on this grim and slow film.

Akshay Kumar is the most stylish: Rocky S

Designer Rocky S has clothed Bollywood star Akshay Kumar for eight long years and says the actor is the most stylish and metrosexual man around.

"I have worked with Akshay for eight years. I really respect him for the way he has groomed himself. He has become one of the biggest metrosexual stars, most stylish fashion icon and he is
so successful that I am proud of him. Just look from where he has come and where he has reached," said Rocky.

However, he is no longer designing for Akshay. "I started designing for Akshay in 1992. But I stopped working with him in 2000 because I had to move on. Also, both of us needed to take a break from each other," he added.

Unlike most other Indian designers who started their career by showcasing their collections at fashion shows, Rocky started his stint designing for Bollywood stars. "I started 16 years back. At that time the only opportunity I got was in Bollywood. I think it was good for me, as it has created awareness about my brand. I have met a lot of actors who want to wear clothes designed by me."

Currently Rocky's clientele includes big names like John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu and Shilpa Shetty. Rocky claimed: "The people I dress up are the best dressed. They are really great with clothes. They have a great body to carry off anything and they have a good style of their own."

Talking about the likings of his female clients, he added: "Shilpa likes deeper and rich Indian colours. She likes to wear emerald, she loves red and it really suits her. Even Bipasha likes red. Katrina likes pastel and lighter shades."

His most recent project was the hit flick Singh is Kinng. He dressed Katrina in the film and is also working with her in Yuvraj. Apart from that he has designed Bipasha's clothes for Pankh and Kangana Ranaut's for Raaz - The Mystery Continues. Rocky says designing for the actors is challenging. "It is fun to work with actors and also challenging to make them look different every time. It is also a challenge for them to get into a character every time with different clothes and looks. A lot of hard work is required in Bollywood."

On an average, Rocky takes up almost four projects in a year. The Mumbai-based designer entered mainstream fashion around 1997 to cater to the general public. He introduced the collection under his label Rocky S.

"When I started, fashion was not even taking off in a very big manner and I think it was after four to five years that I felt the need to do creative work for myself. That's when I started doing clothes that were more wearable and saleable.

"I came at the right time for mainstream fashion. Luckily, I have kept a very good balance between Bollywood and mainstream fashion till now," he said. He is gearing up to participate in the upcoming Spring-Summer edition of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) to be held in the capital from Oct 15-19.

Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP) is a more common term of 'phone over the Internet'. If you have a reasonable quality Internet connection then you can get phone services delivered to your Internet connection. The VoIP-to-VoIP phone calls are sometimes free while VoIP calls connecting to Public Switching Telephone Network (VoIP-to-PSTN) may have an attached cost that is charged by the VoIP service provider.

There are three categories of VoIP service provider. These are, Single line resident/business plans service provider, B2B service provider-bulk organisational/terminal service provider (Business VoIP solutions) and RIP VoIP service provider.

You can use your computer while talking on the VoIP phone and some service provider offers service that can be used where a high speed Internet connection is not available. Using VoIP service in a new location may affect your ability to connect directly to emergency services. So, be ready to use the services of VoIP solutions but with due care.

Charlize Theron and Stuart Townsend have been happily together for years, but the actress, 33, admits before she found Stuart, 35, weren't always easy.

She tells August’s UK Elle, “He got through to me on a level that no one else did. Stuart made me softer. He was one of the few guys who wasn’t afraid o me. What he saw was not toughness but vulnerability.”

As for the reason she and her partner of seven years have yet to tie the knot, she says, “I want to know that I wake up every morning with him because I want to, not because a piece of paper says so.”

Mummy-Tomb of the Dragon Emperor 700mb

Well this a real sequel of the first two mummy movies, after several duplicate movies were released in countries like India with the same name Mummy 3. This movie goes with a different director and a different location in China rather than taking it in the same old desert of Egypt. Rachel weisz's absence is a big let down. And jet li's presence of just about 20 mins in the movie is a bigger let down. And that makes whole movie a biggest let down :)

Phoonk has shocked the industry: RGV

As a filmmaker, 2007 was a disastrous year for Ram Gopal Varma but now he's struck back with vengeance! His latest, Phoonk has had a thunderous opening nationwide and marks the director's return to the paranormal. An encounter with Ram Gopal on what he believes, is the 'industry shocker'.

Did you do som black magic in theaters which helped fetch audience for Phoonk?
Well, let that be a mystery. What I can see though is that industry seems to be in a state of shock with the success of the film. They were not really hoping that a film like Phoonk would actually fetch a 100 per cent opening across the country.

What do you feel is so shocking about the way Phoonk has performed at the box office?
First and foremost, it has broken the fallacy that films with no stars and songs can't work at the box office. So many in the industry are shocked because we have constantly lived under this impression that a film can be a success only if there are big stars, item songs and comedy ingredients. Now tomorrow if someone says this, Phoonk can be clearly looked as an exhibit.

But stars can't be discounted, isn't it?
No way can they be discounted. But then how many saleable stars do we have? 10-12 maybe! In how many films can they act in a year? Perhaps 20 or 25! Now, Bollywood needs at least 120 movies to be churned out every year to keep the distributors and exhibitors running. So who acts in these remaining 100 odd movies? You need to have an alternate mechanism in place. This is where the subject matter comes in. You may not have stars but then you should have a subject which is good enough for an audience to be enticed enough to walk into theaters, just like Phoonk did.

You would still continue to make films with stars as well as newcomers, isn't it?
That's exactly the point. It is the subject which warrants whether you need stars for them or not. I would have films with star power and also actors like Sudeep (lead actor in Phoonk) who fit into the character definition. See, if you go to a DVD library, so many times you pick a DVD if the three line synopsis on the cover excites you enough. The film may not boast of known names but the subject could be interesting enough. Hollywood has realised that and is quickly moving in that direction where it is not being dependent on stars any more. Bollywood too can be seen going in the same direction.

Talking about Sudeep, he seems to be having a terrific screen presence.
He is a superb actor and that's exactly the reason he is seen in Phoonk. He is quite a name down South in Kannada movies.

Coming back to the success of Phoonk, your favorite critics still seem to be continuing their hate-affair with your films.
They seem to be in love with thrashing my films. In fact, at so many places, the reviews for Phoonk have been worse than even Contract. They certainly seem to be oblivious about the audience reception for Phoonk. On one hand our film had posters that only screamed of crew members since there were no stars in it while on the other hand there were posters of this other film which boasted of the likes of a Mallika Sherawat. Now it is hardly a secret that which film eventually managed to bring in the audience!

You really seem to have surprised quite a lot of people here?
While the all-India success of Phoonk is indeed heartening, what takes the cake is to see it turning out to be the biggest success of my career in a place like UP. I guess more than me, it is the audience which has managed to surprise many out here in the industry!

Eesha's different role in RGV's film Shabri

With six releases lined up this year, actor Eesha Koppikar is excited about her look in her forthcoming film Shabri with Ram Gopal Varma. At the launch of a new store, Studio 7, in Mumbai on Thursday, Eesha spoke about her latest de-glam look.

“It’s a completely de-glam look. She's a girl from the rural basti-jhoparpatti. It’s actually more than de-glam, it’s yuck and ugly. People didn't recognise me and said 'How can you look ugly' and I take that as a compliment. It’s very difficult to make me look ugly. But still there was a special pan stick that my make-up man created by mixing two three colours, and it looked like chocolate mousse,” she said.

Shabri directed by Lalit Marathe portrays Eesha as the first woman gangster.

"We don't really like looking dirty, ugly and non-presentable. I remember my van said Shabri, it didn't say Eesha Koppikar. A lot of people there within the vicinity saw me getting out of the make up van getting onto the sets and getting back to the van said, ‘who's this ugly jharoovali, who’s the heroine of the film?’ But that's half the battle won because you are in the character when you get into the skin of the character, half the battle is won.”

After donning gray shades in Don, Eesha hopes the essence of her negative role is received well in Shabri too.

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake are finally set to record a duet. The 'Toxic' singer and her ex-boyfriend, who have been the subject of rumours they will record a song together for months, are to reportedly team up for a track on Britney's new album, due to be released later this year.

Earlier this year, it was reported Jamie had asked Justin to perform with Britney, but the 'SexyBack' singer had refused.

At the time, a source said: "Jamie wanted Justin to help Britney. For a time Justin seriously considered doing a couple of concerts with her to help her out."

As well as a duet with Justin, Britney's next album is set to include a song she has written about her sons - Sean Preston, two, and 23-month-old Jayden James. The troubled star revealed: "I've written a song for my next LP about them called 'My Baby'. It's a beautiful song, I'm really proud of it."

VoIP Solutions - The New Age Telephony

Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP) is a more common term of 'phone over the Internet'. If you have a reasonable quality Internet connection then you can get phone services delivered to your Internet connection. Before reaching the destination, the technology converts voice into regular telephonic signal. By using this service, you can directly make calls from your computer with the help of a special VoIP phone or a traditional phone connected to a special adapter. Some people use VoIP solutions along with their traditional phone service, though VoIP solution providers usually offer lower rates than the traditional companies. Sometimes VoIP phone calls (even international) can be absolutely FREE. Several service providers are present who provide these type of "free" facilities. Examples are: 'Free World Dial up' and 'Skype'. The service providers sometime permit to select an area code different from the area. On the other side, some VoIP providers do charge for a long distance call for outside calling area, just like the traditional wireless telephone service. And some VoIP solution providers permit you to call anywhere at a flat rate for a fixed number for a minute.

The VoIP-to-VoIP phone calls are sometimes free while VoIP calls connecting to Public Switching Telephone Network (VoIP-to-PSTN) may have an attached cost that is charged by the VoIP service provider.

There are three categories of VoIP service provider. These are, Single line resident/business plans service provider, B2B service provider-bulk organisational/terminal service provider (Business VoIP solutions) and RIP VoIP service provider.

You can use your computer while talking on the VoIP phone and some service provider offers service that can be used where a high speed Internet connection is not available. Using VoIP service in a new location may affect your ability to connect directly to emergency services. So, be ready to use the services of VoIP solutions but with due care.

Willis's amicably divorced parents, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, attended the Westwood premiere of the comedy House Bunny – and both brought along their significant others.

The last public appearance of the entire Willis-Kutcher-Moore five years ago – when the whole crew came together for the 2003 premiere of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

Demi Moore sported a sleeveless ruffly midnight blue dress with black heels and a black clutch while Kutcher kept it youthful with a black suit along with a black and grey striped shirt and a pair of white sneakers.
