Laaga Chunari Mein Daag film trailer hot teaser, cast and plot

Rani Mukherji as Badki
Badki is a fun-loving and happy-go-lucky girl, drunk on the masti of Banaras, but with eyes as crystal clear and innocent as the waters of the sacred Ganga. Her life is full of laughter and the love of her family. When problems crop up, she takes them in her stride, not letting them tarnish her smile. So when the family falls upon bad days, and her studies are stopped, she just girds her loins and helps her mother to keep things going. Protective to a fault, she shields her younger sister Chutki from the problems dogging the family. She is deeply hurt though, when her father keeps wishing she was born a son. Even when the going gets tougher, and she finds herself battling the hard and ruthless city of Mumbai, she does not buckle under, but faces it all with exemplary courage. And she does not hesitate in paying the highest price to support her family.

Konkona Sen Sharma as Chutki
Chutki is a spunky spirited and crazy young girl, with eyes that sparkle with mischief. Playing pranks on her hapless victims, teasing her sister Badki, and harassing her parents are her favourite pastimes, but she also loves her family with a fierce passion. Innocent and protected from the harsh circumstances of her family by Badki and their mother, she revels in their love. Gifted with a sharp and intelligent mind, she is unaware of the sacrifices Badki is making to keep her education going. When she moves to the big city, she finds a wide open sky to open her wings and soar. She excels at work, and actually finds a man who loves her with all her madness and eccentricities.

Jaya Bachchan as Sabitri
Sabitri is the backbone and anchor of the Sahay family. She bears the brunt of every crisis the family encounters. She is dismayed as she sees her husband turn bitter with his failures and turn away from the family. She works hard, making both ends meet, protecting her daughters, facing up to menacing relatives. But her husband's illness is the last straw that breaks her spirit. Alone, bewildered, she leans hard on Badki, her only solace. In her crisis, she does not realize when Badki has reached her own breaking point. And she is the only one who bears the burden of the terrible knowledge of Badki's enormous sacrifices. Sabitri tries hard to ferret out a future for her family from the hard unyielding circumstances of her life.

Anupam Kher as Shivshankar Sahay
Shivshankar Sahay is a retired professor of Economics who has turned bitter and pessimistic after his pension was unfairly suspended by the college. Instead of fighting against the resulting poverty, he has accepted defeat, and hopes that the numerous lottery tickets he buys will land him a fortune that will bring back the glorious days of the past. He vents his frustration on his family, and particularly his elder daughter Badki, as he believes that things would have been different had she been born a son. He strongly opposes Badki's departure for the big city, predicting that she will fail to achieve anything. All this comes back to him when he discovers the enormity of the struggle and sacrifice that Badki had to go through.

Kunal Kapoor as Vivaan
Vivaan is a living embodiment of Indian youth today. Irreverent, iconoclastic, totally laidback, yet very good at what he does. He is rude, messy, and unfazed about his lack of manners. Full of wit and humor, he loves a laugh, wherever and by whichever means he can get it. Typical of the urban youth, he does not have a clue as to how the rest of India lives. So when Chutki joins his advertising agency, he dismisses her as a small town girl. But Chutki's spunk, spirit, and insights blow him away. She matches him barb for barb, retort for retort and he finds that he is head over heels in love. Vivaan and Chutki's chemistry is so potent; they set off sparks when they are in the same room. For her, he is willing to go to the end of the world, or on his knees.

Abhishek Bachchan as Rohan
Rohan is a highly educated and world-renowned attorney, sought after throughout the world for his expertise. However, inside this suave and smart young man resides a mischievous, impish spirit. When he encounters Badki this spirit takes over completely. Bowled over totally by Badki's innocence and guilelessness, he is intrigued by her homegrown wisdom and her deep faith too. This chance encounter leads to a bit of stolen time for both, when the child inside Badki makes her acquaintance with the imp inside Rohan. They forget the rest of the world as they revel in each other's company. What is happening between the two is like a flower just beginning to blossom. But the harsh realities of their lives intervene, and the magic is shattered. Rohan is determined to get to the crux of things, but will he be able to handle what he discovers?

Synopsis

Badki and Chutki live a fun-filled life in Banaras, playing pranks, sneaking off to see a forbidden mujra, and soaking up all the excitement that goes on the ghats of the Ganga. Badki is aware that the family is in dire straits, but she and her mother protect Chutki at all costs. When things get worse, Badki decides to go to Mumbai and seek a living for the family. Alone and unsupported in the midst of the urban jungle of Mumbai, Badki battles with dark forces, keeping her focus on her purpose to support her family and continue Chutki's education.

She deliberately morphs into someone else, leading a secret life full of murky compromises. When Chutki comes to Mumbai to work, things take a dramatic turn. Badki's life turns into a minefield, as she has to hide her secrets from Chutki. Chutki finds success at work, and love that delights her heart. Badki finds the magic of love, but lets it slip away before it can blossom, as she believes it's not in her destiny. She battles menace and blackmail alone, not letting these dark shadows fall on Chutki or her family.

But her dual life is revealed, and the two sisters are face to face, in a confrontation neither had expected. And when love beckons Badki again, the whole family is thrown in a tumultuous storm. Everything threatens to explode in their faces, destroying all of them.

Will Badki get the happy ending she deserves?

Or will the shadows of her past douse the lamps of hope?

Will her secrets ruin Chutki's happiness?

Can their parents face up to all this?

'Saawariya', 'Om Shanti Om' rivalry spills over to TV

By Subhash K. Jha

Mumbai, Sep 27 (IANS) The festive season plus the importance of two super-biggies being released the same Friday is the reason why the competition between "Saawariya" and "Om Shanti Om" is so hot.

Television is also being caught up in the impending war of the Bollywood biggies. On Sep 29, while the "Saawariya" team will be seen on STAR's "Voice Of India", the "Om Shanti Om" team will appear at the same time on Zee's "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa", thereby putting the average couch potato in a state of anxiety.

"Voice Of India's" producer-director Gajendra Singh said: "Having Sanjay Bhansali and the two 'Saawariya' debutants on our show was such a delight. Sanjayji is a complete music person.

He handpicked all the songs from the great Raj Kapoor epics on his own and when one of the contestants Abhas excelled in singing the title song from 'Satyam Shivum Sunderam', he spontaneously came forward to greet the contestant. It was a very emotional evening for all of us. Though this is the first time Ranbir and Sonam were recording for any show they were so confident."

The "Om Shanti Om" special to be telecast simultaneously on Zee features Shreyas Talpade, Deepika Padukone and director Farah Khan. Shah Rukh Khan couldn't appear on the show because he is apparently contract-bound with STAR.

"But he sent a list of requests for the contestants to sing. Those will be featured in the second-half of the show. During the first-half we'll have the contestants singing the 'Om Shanti Om' tracks since two of our judges Vishal and Shekhar are also the music directorrs of Farah Khan's film," sai Payaol Patel of "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa".

'Namaste, Tera Baap Chor Hai'

Celina Jaitley has revealed how she once made the director of her first "foreign" film Love Has No Languages, Ken Khan, greet Indian guests at a party by saying "Namaste, tera baap chor hai" (Greetings, your father is a thief).

The actress, who has acted in about 10 Bollywood movies since winning the Miss India contest in 2001, said that it was just a prank, and that she had later admitted before people that she was behind it.

"You should have seen the expression on the guests' faces when Ken actually said that to them. They were just stunned and did not know how to react," a tabloid quoted her as saying.

"Later I told the guests that it was a prank that I had played on him," she added.

'Love Has No Languages' is based on a cross-cultural romance. It stars Jaitley as an Indian girl brought up in New Zealand who falls in love with Kiwi actor Ben Mitchell.

I am single and want to be in Love

First it was John Abraham during Salaam-e-Ishq. Now it's Akshay Kumar.

Vidya Balan has been shooting two back-to-back films with the Kumar. "And we had ourselves a ball in Jaipur and Australia. That's where we shot Priyadarshan's Bhul Bulaiya and Sajid Khan's Hey Baby."

Vidya has just returned after four months of hectic shooting. And she can't help chuckling at the memory. "Akshay is a major prankster. I had to be on tenterhooks all through the two schedules. One never knew what Akshay was up to.

My one ambition in life is to get even with him for all the pranks he has played with me. Shooting has seldom been so much fun. I didn't even realize how these two long schedules for two completely contrasting films passed by."

Vidya is aware that tongues will start wagging all over again. "I'm quite prepared for stories to filter back. I've gone through this before. During Salaam-e-Ishq they linked me with John Abraham for the same reason. Because people saw us having so much fun together. Now there'll be gossip because Akshay and I had ourselves a great time."

Remind her that it's only healthy for a young attractive single girl like her to be linked with co-stars and Vidya sighs, "Yes, I'm young and single and most certainly looking forward to being in love.

Unfortunately both John and Akshay are attached. And that creates an embarrassment more for them than me. So that's that…Come to think of it, where are the eligible single guys in our industry? I'll have to look elsewhere."

Dhokha

By Subhash K Jha

Starring Muzamil Ibrahim, Tulip Joshi, Anupam Kher
Written by Mahesh Bhatt
Directed by Pooja Bhatt
Rating: ***

Not every potential terrorist belongs to one particular community. Yes, sounds like a brutally vulgar adage in this day and age of murderous rage.

The man who violates your privacy and right to expression, or the woman who uses the educational institution to propagate prostitution, are the true terrorists of our society.

Look around you. Terror stares and stalks you in so many garbs,in and out of the burqa. You cannot escape it in one form or another.

Terrorism is a religion of its own.

In Dhokha, writer Mahesh Bhatt brings the savagely rampant cult of terrorism into the precincts of the middleclass household. The portrait of a derelict soul looking for his lost domestic utopia in the rubble of a nasty bomb explosion, is stark real dark and poignant.

You can't miss the urgent and brutal honesty of Mahesh Bhatt's writing skills.

He weaves a pastiche of angst and heartbreak from the raw material of headlines. The end-result is thought-provoking emotional and, most important of all, original.

In a week where we are subjected to two remakes of 1970s' films Dhokha with its renewable but non-derivative topicality washes away the sins of excessive inspiration that plagues present-day cinema in Hindi.

Pooja Bhatt directs the stark story with a keen sense of historicity overlapping lives that would like to go about the unfinished business of their day-to-day activities, if only destiny didn't have other plans.

Presume for a minute that the woman who shares your bed and sleeps in your head has a secret identity. One such inescapably poignant situation was created for Harisson Ford Sidney Pollack's Random Hearts where his dead turns out to have a secret life.

Could the man or woman you trust with your life be planting bombs in her head? As Hyderabad burns you wonder what thought processes go behind minds that plan the carnage of the innocence.

More than anything else Dhokha is a pungent and powerful product of our troubled times, told with a spirited and sustained energy that allows sound technicians to do their jobs with quiet authority.

At the center of the excruciating jigsaw of trust and betrayal is the debutant Muzamil Ibrahim. Playing the tormented widower he exudes an aura of confident tragedy that belies his rawness as an actor. The brawn never comes in the way of sensitive expressions of a cop whose loyalty and integrity are weighed against his personal loss. The newcomer carries the emotional scenes well on his sturdy shoulders.

And if you're tired of seeing Anupam Kher doing comedy, here's the actor getting back to his roots, putting in a powerhouse performance as a bereaved afther battling ostracization from a society that never accepted him in the first place.

Suffused with a sense of imminent catastrophe and an aura of implosive tension applied to the explosive theme, Dhokha is a film that persuades you not-so-gently to think about the quality of lives that we live and a social order that thinks terrorism happens only to 'them'.

Really, one hasn't a more jolting reality-check in a while.

Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag

Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Sushmita Sen, Prashaant Raj, Nisha Kothari
Directed by Ram Gopal Varma
Rating: **

No, this isn't the worst re-make you're likely to see. Nor does Ram Gopal Varma's Aag claim to have the wherewithal, the stock, substance and spice of Sippy's Sholay.

Let's just call Aag an interesting revisionist version of Sholay and be done with.

The biggest mistake we can make while watching Varma go back to his favourite film (with his favourite actor, Amitabh Bachchan, playing a role that has already been done to 'dread') is to look for signs symbols and signals from the past.

Varma is to blame for doing some sequences as parodic homages to Sippy's Sholay. What is that, if not a tittering tribute to the original, when the neo-Samba (played by a Varma regular Ravi Kale) comes back after being hammered by the two mercenary heroes.

Bachchan –Babban does the Kitne aadmi tthey scene like a rude game of Russian roulette with the stakes being life and death.

Trouble is, Ramu treats the classic material with an iconoclastic take-it-or-edit-it-out casualness. Some of the original's most celebrated sequences (such as Jai going to Basanti's Mausi with Veeru's rishta) have been defiantly and not quite definitively subverted to suit the stench of gangsterism that Varma's cinema embraces almost intuitively.

Every time he looks at human relations within a specific socio-political context, it's almost always the underworld.

The biggest failing of Varma's revisionist Sholay is its locational dereliction. The action unfolds in a series of indeterminate disembodied locations, mainly run-down ware-houses, half-constructed high-rise buildings and sets that seem to suggest nothing beyond the immediate present that exists between the 'action' and 'cut'

Cut to Sippy's Sholay where the boulder-centric locations defined the outlaw's menacing evil with geo-political accuracy. …or the Thakur's bustling family- home where the villain's savage carnage occurred.

Here the slaughter of the police inspector's family is strictly ritualistic…designed to shock rather than create a distending drama of dread and vendetta through the poignant annhiliation of the family nucleus.

Mr Bachchan invests the villain's part with loads of nuanced diabolism, wacky humour and seemingly casual one-liners.

"Wait till his family hears this news break," puns the film's boistereous baddy Babban after breaking off some of the seething police inspector Narsaimha (Mohanlal)'s finger.

Sanjeev Kumar's chopped hand from Sholay become Mohanlal's severed fingers in Aag. The silently weeping-widow Radha from Sholay is transformed into a mutedly militant medico with not even a medical kit by her side to prove her sincerety towards her profession. And the post-Holi dacoit's attack on Sholay become a Diwali mayhem in Aag.

Festival sideline?

Inexcusably the action scenes (Pradhyumna) and the other technical aspects including the camera work (by Amit Roy who was so incredibly outstanding in some of Varma's earlier films) don't seem to liven up the luminous antecedents of this purported homage to a timeless film.

Barring one major sequence between Babban and his morally antithetical brother (Sachin), some light moments between Ghungroo the auto-ricksaw siren and Rehmat (Gaurav Kapoor) the blind Muslim patriarch's playful son, and some perfunctory scenes between the vengeful cop and his non-practising medico-bahu (a.k.a as the widow in black) the inter-relationships among the character just don't hold together,

Specially damaging to the neo-plot is the complete lack of camaraderie between the new-millennium Jai and Veeu, now known as Raj and Heero.

Devgan and newcomer Prashaant Raj (competent in glimpses) look like two acquaintances who have recently met at a railway station. Simply playing Yeh dosti as part of the background score (judicious mix of nostalgia and modernity by Amar Mohile) doesn't help create any bonding between the supposed buddies.

No, I am not going to think about the warm vibes between Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra in Sholay…Or the clean but carnal chemistry between Veeru and Basanti here reduced a touchy-touchy-feely-feely sticky liaison between Devgan and Nisha Kothari (she knows how to act, but now how much).

I'd still run back and view Ramu's revisionist Sholay for the pleasure of watching Mr Bachchan's Babban flick his tongue over his lips in a mix of menace and mischief, and for seeing the way Varma has steered the original material through murky waters to give Sholay a new-age look, albeit a look that's more bleak than bright.

But then who said movies were always about light?

Victoria No. 203

Cast: Om Puri, Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill, Preeti Jhangiani, Sonia Mehra, Kamal Sadanah, Javed Jaffrey, Tora Khasgir, Rajesh Khera
Director: Anant Mahadevan
Rating: **

Of the two remakes released this week, "Victoria No. 203" is slightly better than "Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag" but not good enough to strike gold at the box office.

The basic premise here is the same as before. Screenplay writers Sunjiv Puri and Manoj Tyagi haven't brought in many changes to the original script, except that the locker in the remake, where instructions to find the diamonds are kept, is at Mumbai's VT Station instead of Bori Bunder.

Though the witty one-liners are quite refreshing, they lack the required punch when delivered by Om Puri and Anupam Kher.

Directed by Anant Mahadevan, the film is a remake of Brij Sadanah's 1972 hit comic-thriller "Victoria No. 203" about a diamond robbery. Amazing on screen chemistry between Pran and Ashok Kumar and engaging performances by the rest of the cast, including main lead Naveen Nishchol and Saira Banu, turned the original into a super duper hit.

However, the new version, despite the presence of seasoned actors like Om Puri and Anupam Kher, who step into the shoes of Pran and Ashok Kumar, fails to hold the audience's interest.

Om Puri and Anupam play stereotypical funny, golden-hearted thieves and their performances are not at all striking or stirring. Their acting lacks spontaneity and perfect timing; instead of laughing at their funny acts, you just feel sorry for them.

Jimmy Shergill has established himself as a good actor but he doesn't impress either as an undercover police officer. Javed Jaffrey as a businessman, who is ready to go to any length to lay hands on the precious diamonds, is shallow and repetitive. So is Johnny Lever, who makes a special appearance in the end.

Sonia Mehra, daughter of well-known actor Vinod Mehra, makes her debut with the film. She possesses star quality but her emoting is not up to the mark.

Tora Khasgir, who plays an expert thief, is the surprise package. Though she doesn't have much to do, she succeeds in holding the viewer's attention as long as she is on screen. Preeti Jhangiani plays a negative role and she does it with conviction.

Mahadevan's direction lacks deftness. The film is disjointed in many places, which lessens the excitement and thrill. It also lacks a modern approach that one would expect.

Sometimes good music pulls of a film but Viju Shah's composition too lacks appeal.

The original was produced by Brij Sadanah and the remake is presented by his son Kamal, who also features in the film as a baddie. But unfortunately his cash register won't jingle like his father's.

"Victoria No. 203" could have been a lot of fun if better paced and well acted.

Nanhe Jaisalmer

By Subhash K Jha

Written & Directed by Samir Karnik
Rating: ** ½

34 years ago a remarkable debutante named Jaya Bhaduri bunked school to get Dharmendra's autograph in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Guddi.

2007. Young Dwij Yadav who's a bundle of over-ripe adult expressions packaged in the cutest turban on this side of Jimmy Mistry's Guru, is also a diehard fan…of Dharmendra's son Bobby Deol.

One can't help but notice the cool-quotient that the Junior has inherited from the Senior Deol. Like Dhramendra Paaji, Bobby Beta creates an aura of accessibility.

Yes, this is one star capable of forming a bonding with a fan. Bobby's scenes with that dynamo Dwij don't looked faked or forced. Beta late than never

Nanhe Jaisalmer is a crisp, minty and somewhat audacious attempt to portray a friendship between two people separated by aeons of culture and class status. The script leaves elbowroom for plenty of interactive synergy between the two protagonists.

From casual camel rides to Himesh Reshammiya's songs which fill the desert air with the aroma of cinematic liberation, Nanhe… has a warm lived-in endearing feel to it. You can't help warming up to the friendship between these two unlikely companions in the desert.

The sands of Jaisalmer are shot by Binod Pradhan as compressed catalysts serving as a mute but eloquent witness to the burgeoning friendship between star and fan.

Is a friendship between a star and his admirer really possible? While Hrishida's Guddi dodged the question by simply making Dharmendra a humane figure representing a specific morality rather than a profession, Bobby is given space to reveal how a star, if given a chance can open up to a fan.

The inhibitions, if any, come from the other side. When the fan is as confident of his interactive space as young Dwij sparks fly between the star and the 'common' friend. Questions of child literacy and also the wages of cultural and emotional isolation are brought into play without burdening the narrative with unwanted issues.

Like the other release this week Aggar, Nanhe… too ends with a shocking twist which takes away some of the flavour fervour and virginal flamboyance of the Deol-Dwij bonding.

But their dosti is fun while it lasts. It reminded me Amitabh Bachchan and Sweeny Khare in Cheeni Kum.

Kabhi kabhi Nanhe Jaisalmer mein cheeni zyada ho jata hai. But the brew has a decent and positive flavour to it.

Lyrics of Song You're Still the One :
When I first saw you, I saw love.
And the first time you touched me, I felt love.
And after all this time, you're still the one I love.

Looks like we made it
Look how far we've come my baby
We mighta took the long way
We knew we'd get there someday

They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together still going strong

You're still the one
You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're the one I want for life
You're still the one
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss good night

Ain't nothin' better
We beat the odds together
I'm glad we didn't listen
Look at what we would be missin'

They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together still going strong

You're still the one
You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're the one I want for life
You're still the one
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss good night

You're still the one
You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're the one I want for life
You're still the one
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss good night

I'm so glad we made it
Look how far we've come my baby
