Bollywood faces cash crunch as movie success rate dips to 2%
With the success rate of movies dwindling to an alarming two per cent, the Hindi film industry 'Bollywood' is facing a severe cash crunch these days.
The movie Moghuls, after squandering crores in the film industry, are now at their wit's end, desparately trying to come out of a difficult situation caused by the dwindling cash flow with the blockbusters falling flat at the box office week-after-week, industry sources said.
The high cost of production, soaring star remunerations and spending fortune on shootings abroad, have left producers, distributors and exhibitors pondering over new strategies to come out of the crunch.
Except for Aamir Khan starrer 'Rang de Basanti', none of the films released this year have managed a fair initial, trade sources said. 'Black', 'Bunty Aur Babli', 'No Entry' and 'Waqt' had clicked in a big way last year.
"The pricing of films has gone haywire with several corporates coming in and offering fancy prices to stars in the range of Rs 2-4 crore and this has also resulted in technicians jacking up their prices, having an cascading effect on the overall budget of films," a leading distributor said.
The massive losses faced by big distributors have made others extra-cautious about buying films, resulting in a number of films left unsold in natural territories, sources said.

AMITABH RETURNS TO BOLLYWOOD
After two months and 20 days of rest after his surgery Amitabh Bachchan has resumed working again. He started work by singing a song for music director Aadesh Shrivastava for Ravi Chopra’s film, Baabul. We wish this singing start go well for him.
With the news Bollywood is buzzing with delight and work has started to pile in front of him. Soon Amitabh will start dubbing for Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Eklavya, the project which has been delayed a month. Then he has plans for some more singing!
The song will feature both Amitabh and Abhishek and has music by Vishal-Shekhar (I think they are looking for another Kajra Re). Rohan Sippy is producing the song for a private Album.
Although Amitabh has started working, he is taking it easy. The actor said, “I’m going to take one step at a time. I’m starting with what is less stressful and what does not require me to go to the studios. I will be undergoing my final tests at the end this month or the first week of March. Then we will start allotting my dates for film shoots.”
At the beginning he will complete his pending films, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (where a small part of his work is remaining) and Ravi Chopra’s Baabul. Then he will work on Balkrishnan’s ‘Cheeni Kam’, Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Sholay’, ‘Sarkar 2′ and ‘Ek’ which are in various stages of pre-production.

Krrish
Krrish is a sequel to Koi Mil Gaya and story continues. Rohit and Nisha are married and they have a kid. They both die in a car accident. The kid starts growing up in his grand mother care. As he is growing up he discovers that he has superpowers (in Koi Mil Gaya Jadoo transferred his powers into Rohit, which apparently went to his son). The movie basically shows how he deals with his power and save the world from a villain (Naseeruddin Shah). Krrish Mehra (Hrithik Roshan) is a man with extraordinary strength, speed and intelligence. He loves the calmness and beauty of natural mountainous and surroundings where he is living. He comes across Priya (Priyanka Chopra), a beautiful girl from Singapore, who has come there for camping and trekking and falls in love with her. Krrish is left heart broken when she finally has to leave for Singapore. When Sonia, Krrish grandmother (Rekha) sees how lonely he has become, she encourages him to go to Singapore and woo Priya back.
Krrish reach Singapore; find it a completely new and fascinating world. He learns fast and adapts to it quickly. He makes new Chinese friends in Singapore and woos Priya. In one of the songs, the atmosphere is that of a carnival where most of the people are wearing masks of different kinds. The song continues into a circus, there a short circuit happens and the tent of the circus catches fire. The circus performers get stranded on top and start screaming for help. Krrish realizes that he can help them. He sees a slightly broken burnt Mask lying on the ground nearby. He dons the mask for hiding his identity and save them in a spectacular manner. This heroic deed makes the ‘Masked Man‘ a hero and a nationwide search is launched for this new hero in Singapore. Shooting of much-awaited movie is complete however the special effects are yet to be incorporated. According to reports, Krrish is all set to release in June 2006, during the summer vacation.
Some facts/Trivia related to Krrish
Hrithik will be seen in six stunning looks - an old man, the young guy from Koi Mil Gaya, a village look, a Singapore based fashionable guy look, Superhero look plus there is a child actor who plays a young Hrithik. Amrita Rao was the first choice for the role of Priya, but Rakesh Roshan saw Priyanka’s performance in a special screening of Aitraaz (2004) and was so impressed that he decided to cast her instead. Aishwarya Rai was also considered for the role. Working title of Krrish was “Koi … Tumsa Nahin“. The Krrish character in the movie is very strong and can leap 30 feet in the air. Hrithik Roshan received special training in Hong Kong for the special leap he makes in this film. Hrithik Roshan did extensive martial arts training for this movie - his trainer was Tony Ching Siu Tung (from Hong Kong). Despite only 25 days of training in China, his instructor thought that he could pull off stunts which usually take years of training. In the famous circus scene, Hrithik Roshan suffered a hamstring tear in his right leg. Doctors prescribed bed rest for two weeks but he continued shooting after two days using pain killers. Hrithik Roshan broke his right thumb and a toe during the strenuous training for the ambitious wire work used in the film. He also singed his hair while running through a fire in another action scene.

Hrithik, Aishwarya to play villains in 'Dhoom 2'
It's official: Bollywood superstars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai are being paired for the first time in the much talked about sequel to "Dhoom". And that's not all: they are playing the baddies.
Hrithik is thrilled to be the villain. "I've played the good guy long enough. Now it's time for me to get seriously evil," he laughed.
"I always wanted to play a cool villain. And since the bad guy in 'Dhoom 2' is multi-dimensional, I'll have so much fun with the character. Playing this nightmarish guy is a dream come true," Hrithik told IANS.
The sequel, a hi-tech thriller to be directed once again by Sanjay Gadhvi, boasts a profusion of special effects and action spectacles and is being touted as "bigger, costlier and more in-your-face than 'Dhoom'".
The film brings together the untried pair of Hrithik and Aishwarya, with the "Bride and Prejudice" star playing the villain's girlfriend.
Hrithik and Aishwarya have repeatedly missed the chance of appearing together. Just after the release of "Kaho Na...Pyar Hai", the two were supposed to appear in director Tanuja Chandra's wartime love story about a nurse and a soldier.
More recently Hrithik and Aishwarya were all but signed for Rakesh Roshan's sequel to "Koi...Mil Gaya".
With the Khans - Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir - out of her orbit (Aamir is miffed because she turned down "The Rising"), Aishwarya is desperately in need of dependable and saleable heroes.
"How many films can I do with Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt?" she said.
They would make an interesting pair especially since both go into mean mode for "Dhoom 2".
After her guest appearance in "Bunty Aur Babli" with the Bachchans, "Dhoom 2" would be another major step into the fold of Yashraj Films for Aishwarya.
Sanjeev Kohli, CEO of Yashraj Films told IANS: "We've been in talks with Aishwarya and Hrithik for a while. The two stars are cast in very different roles. Also the fact that they've never appeared together before adds to the film's USP."

Is it all Over for Salman??
The court has finally put an end to his misery by sentencing him to one year of imprisonment. With an estimated Rs 150 crore riding on Khan right now, the film industry should be in a tizzy but it is not pushing the panic button just yet.
"It is very difficult for me to say at this stage how my film will be affected," reveals director Ravi Chopra whose Babul stars Salman. "But I am sure Salman will come out of this unscathed."
A sentiment echoed by director Raj Kanwar, who is planning a film with the star. "Salman will bounce back from this. I am planning a project with him which will begin after the release of my Akshay Kumar starrer Humko Deewana Kar Gaye."
Salman has a cameo appearance in the film. The projects which could land in trouble if the judgment comes through are Sajid Nadiadwala's Jaaneman, Nikhil Advani's Salaam-E-Ishq, Chopra's Babul, Rumi Jaffrey's God Tussi Great Ho, amongst others.
"Since it is a suspended sentence, everyone is pinning their hopes on his appeal," reveals trade analyst Vinod Mirani.
But will the judgment have an effect on his fan following, thereby also affecting the BO fate of his films? "Not even one per cent," laughs trade analyst Komal Nahata.

Bollywood Movies on Google Video
Does Google Video offer copyrighted Bollywood movies for free? Indeed, it looks like it. According to this article by the Economic Times, Hindi films like “Bunty Aur Babli”, “Paheli”, “Neal ’N’ Nikki”, and “Ek Khilari Ek Hasina” are found on Google’s website.
Searching Google Video for the titles mentioned in the article, I could often find nothing or only excerpts of up to 7 minutes (a little more than fair use, I suppose)... with some notable exceptions. I was offered to download a 1+ hour version of “Bunty Aur Babli” (you can download the movie from anywhere in the world using one of the Google Video Downloader sites). A search for “Banty Aur Babli” (note the spelling difference) returns hour-long videos as well. Searching for “Neel n Nicky” returned a movie in several different parts (the first part at 8 minutes, the second at 37, and the third part at 44 minutes). The search query “hindi funny movie” finds a movie at 1 hour, 50 minutes. The keyword “Aitraaz” returns a full movie as well (it’s split up in two parts), and so does a search for “Kya kool hai hum.”

Oscar: Shah Rukh Khan says he's not disappointed.
Bollywood leading man Shah Rukh Khan said Wednesday that he wasn't disappointed his movie failed to win a nomination for the best foreign film at the Academy Awards.
Khan's film "Paheli,'' or "Riddle,'' was India's entry for the foreign film category, and the actor said in an interview with the NDTV news channel that he was proud of his work, even if it didn't make the Oscar cut.
"If it could have happened through a film that I was associated with, it would have made be doubly proud. It makes me proud anyway,'' Khan said. "I am not disappointed.''
Nominations for the Oscars were announced Tuesday.

Rang De Basanti – Review
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra ’s movie Rang De Basanti is a well-crafted and beautifully told story that entertains you, makes you think and stirs you deep inside in the end.The movie stars Aamir Khan , British actress Alice Patten , Madhavan , Soha Ali Khan , Kunal Kapoor , Siddharth , Sharman Joshi , Atul Kulkarni and Kiron Kher .
The plot of the movie straddles two different time periods – first one, the contemporary setting revolving around a group of friends. The second one is in the pre-independence India, revolving around freedom fighters like Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh and Ashfak. Parallels are drawn between the characters in the two time periods and as the story moves towards its conclusion, the barrier of time begins to dissolve and the characters become one in spirit. Sue (Alice Patten) comes to India to make a documentary on some freedom fighters about whom she gets to know from the diary of her late grandfather who was a British officer in India before 1947.After having auditioned many in vain for her movie, Sue, aided by Sonia (Soha Ali Khan), meets a group of friends in whom she sees the characters of her documentary. The group consists of DJ (Aamir Khan), Aslam (Kunal Kapoor), Karan (Siddharth) and Sukhi (Sharman Joshi). Also part of the group is Fl. Lft. Ajay Rathod (Madhavan), the love of Sonia (Soha). He is the only one in the group who has dedication to serve the country. None of the friends is serious enough to be a part of Sue’s documentary. To them values like patriotism, sacrificing oneself for the sake of country are just beautiful words they cannot relate to.But Sue can see the characters of her movie in them. In DJ she sees Chandrashekhar Azad. In Karan she sees Bhagat Singh and in Aslam she sees Ashfak.Even as the five friends agree to be a part of her movie, they still cannot accept the virtues of the characters (of the freedom fighters) they play. But then, Ajay dies in a MiG crash and is labeled as a rookie pilot by the Defence Minister who is unwilling to accept shortcomings in the MiG aircrafts.DJ and friends decide to bring the truth to light. But they choose a very extreme way to do it.Rakeysh Mehra deserves full praise for making a movie that certainly raises the bar for filmmakers in Bollywood. There is not a single dull moment in ‘Rang De Basanti’. The movie begins on a light note and there are humourous moments aplenty in the first half. The second half gets serious after the death of the character played by Madhavan. From then on, the story takes a grave turn and ends on a tragic note. Only Aamir Khan could have enacted the role of DJ, the good-humoured, bike-riding ex-graduate who is afraid to go beyond the life of college campus and friends. Aamir speaks his dialogues with a Punjabi accent, spicing his lines with an expletive here and there. Alice Patten is perfectly cast. She delivers a flawless performance and even shows that she can swear in Hindi. Kunal Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan, Atul Kulkarni are up to the mark. Sharman Joshi is a delight to watch. Siddharth gets his moments of acting at the movie’s end.
